Hagan: Minimum Wage Increase Overdue, Necessary; Elizabeth Dole Has Long History of Opposing Initiative

July 24, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Federal Minimum Wage increase went into effect today, raising the minimum wage from $5.85 to $6.55. It will increase again next year to $7.25. State Senator and U.S. Senate Nominee Kay Hagan (D-Guilford), who has supported an increase in the minimum wage in the state Senate noted her opponent, Senator Elizabeth Dole, has a long history opposing the measure.

“In tough economic times like these, working families need our help, not hindrance, to make ends meet and get ahead,” Kay said. “My record in the state Senate on behalf of working families is clear: I’ve voted to increase the minimum wage to help families in North Carolina. Elizabeth Dole’s 42 years in Washington have left her out of...

Hagan Campaign: Dole's Continued Hypocrisy on Energy Issues Astonishing

July 23, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following years of opposition to increasing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for vehicle manufacturers, Senator Elizabeth Dole recently touted a modest investment in fuel efficiency research, explaining in a press release that “to lower gas prices and achieve energy independence we need to invest in innovative technologies that enhance fuel efficiency.”

“Elizabeth Dole should practice what she preaches – if, by her own admission, lowering gas prices and achieving energy independence requires investments in innovative technologies, then she needs to explain why her public record is littered with votes against increasing fuel efficiency standards, votes...

Hagan Campaign: Granville County Democrats and Republicans Right: Congress Needs To Act Now To Help Working Families

July 22, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Granville County Democratic and Republican Parties issued a joint letter today, calling on Congress to remain in session until they address the rising cost of gasoline. State Senator and U.S. Senate Nominee Kay Hagan’s (D-Guilford) U.S. Senate campaign agreed with the parties, questioning why it’s taken Congress so long to act to begin with.

“It’s clear from this letter written by both Granville Democrats and Republicans that the exorbitantly high price of gas is an issue that is impacting all North Carolinians very deeply,” said Hagan Communications Director Colleen Flanagan. “Rather than suggesting comical ‘bipartisan’ summits in the future, Elizabeth Dole should have gotten started...

Dole Support of Bush Economy Hurts North Carolina

July 18, 2008

GREENSBORO, NC- According to a report by the Associated Press today, North Carolina’s economic woes can be traced directly to the slowing national economy and poor job growth nationally. Harry Payne Jr., chairman of the N.C. Employment Security Commission was quoted as saying, “The slowing national economy is taking its toll on North Carolina,” as the state lost an additional 4,500 jobs in June.

While in the United States Senate, Elizabeth Dole has continually voted to make it more difficult for workers to find and keep a job in North Carolina and the nation. In 2005 alone, Dole voted twice in favor of the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), saying that “Textiles and apparel,...

July 17, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan’s (D-Guilford)campaign today called into question Elizabeth Dole’s efforts to convene a “bipartisan” summit to address our nation’s pressing energy issues and the high price of gas which is crippling the economy and forcing working families to dig deep to make ends meet.

As chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Dole allowed the committee to accept more than $1.2 million in donations from Big Oil and Gas, and since 2002, Dole herself has taken $270,000 from the industry, including $4,000 from Exxon Mobil’s PAC on the last day of June. In addition, she’s taken more than $530,000 from the energy and...

Hagan Campaign to Dole: You Can't Have It Both Ways, Wants President Bush to Protect the Same Coral Reefs She Wants To Drill into for More Oil

July 3, 2008

GREENSBORO, NC- Elizabeth Dole’s campaign this week touted the letter she sent to President Bush asking him to protect the deep sea coral wilderness off the coast of North Carolina, designating it as a marine monument. Dole wrote that the corals may contain “new biomedical breakthroughs” urging its protection because it “cannot be replaced once disturbed and damaged.”

Last week, Elizabeth Dole’s campaign touted the bill she cosponsored which would allow drilling off the coast of states, including North Carolina, where part of the deep sea coral wilderness is located.

Today, the Charlotte Observer’s Bruce Henderson wrote that the corals off of North Carolina’s coast, “could potentially be damaged by...

Hagan on 62,000 Jobs Lost: Middle-Class Cannot Afford More of the Same Policies, Politics from Washington

July 3, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. – State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today released this statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its June jobs report showing a net loss of 62,000 jobs.

“Today’s report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is a sobering reminder of the very reason we need new leadership in Washington. 62,000 more jobs were lost and our nation’s unemployment rate stayed at a record high of 5.5 percent – no wonder middle class families feel as though the American dream is moving further out of their reach. Even those people who have a job may feel the pinch in this economy, with their wages and hours cut to enable businesses to stay in the black.

“The passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 was a watershed moment for our country, and an integral piece of our nation’s history. Residents of my city, Greensboro, are reminded of this historic struggle on a daily basis when they pass the iconic Woolworth’s where the first sit-ins were staged in 1960 by students at North Carolina A & T. I am running for the seat previously held by Senator Jesse Helms, who opposed the Civil Rights Act. It’s clear how far we’ve come, but we still have further to go.

Hagan on Medicare Reimbursement: Why Isn't Congress Proactively Planning Wisely, Budgeting Soundly, Looking Longer-Term?

July 1, 2008

GREENSBORO, NC- State Senator and U.S. Senate Candidate Kay Hagan (D-Guilford) today urged Congress to come up with a solution to ensure that a 10 percent cut in reimbursements for doctors who care for Medicare patients is not realized when Medicare begins processing these claims in two weeks.

“While I’m pleased that doctors won’t be faced with a 10 percent cut in their reimbursement rate in the next two weeks, this delay in reimbursement cuts is only temporary. It’s incumbent upon those in Congress to act immediately to ensure that these vital caregivers aren’t forced to pay for the government’s mismanagement and poor use of funds. We need new leadership in Washington which knows how to cut wasteful spending and...

Dole's Decision To Drill Off The Coast in North Carolina Helps Big Oil; Hurts Consumers, State Tourism, Military

June 27, 2008

GREENSBORO, NC – Again choosing her millionaire friends at Big Oil and Gas companies over North Carolina families, Elizabeth Dole committed a classic flip-flop yesterday when she voiced her support for drilling off the coast of North Carolina, which would do nothing to decrease record high gas prices in the short-term, and would actually serve to increase the record profits oil companies are currently realizing. Previously voicing concern for North Carolina’s military presence off the coast, and the state’s environment and tourism industry, Dole cast those concerns aside for an election year ploy championed by George Bush and John McCain.

“Elizabeth Dole has continued to do Big Oil and Gas’s bidding at every turn, to...
